Bangladesh has been gripped by widespread unrest following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a controversial figure known for his strong anti-India stance. Violence erupted across multiple cities as mobs vandalised property, attacked media establishments and targeted symbols linked to the former Awami League government.
The situation has grown increasingly volatile ahead of Hadi’s funeral in Dhaka, which is expected to be attended by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. Authorities have imposed heightened security measures across the capital and other sensitive areas to prevent further escalation.
According to analysts quoted by India Today, the violence appeared coordinated and pre-planned. An unidentified expert described the unrest as “state-sponsored activity,” suggesting that the scale and simultaneity of attacks pointed to organised mobilisation rather than spontaneous protests.
Amid the chaos, anti-India sentiment has surged sharply. Reports indicate attacks on Indian diplomatic missions and vandalism targeting establishments perceived to have links with New Delhi. These incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety of diplomatic assets and bilateral stability in the region.
The unrest took a darker turn after a Hindu man was lynched and set ablaze by a mob over alleged blasphemy. The killing has triggered widespread condemnation from human rights groups and international observers, who have described the incident as a grave violation of minority rights and the rule of law.
Protesters have also stormed press offices and damaged properties associated with leaders of the former ruling party, deepening fears of political vendetta and communal targeting. Journalists on the ground reported an atmosphere of intimidation, with media personnel facing threats while covering the violence.
The Bangladeshi government has deployed additional police and paramilitary forces, imposed movement restrictions in sensitive zones and vowed to ensure law and order during Hadi’s funeral. Officials have appealed for calm, warning that further violence will be dealt with strictly.
As Bangladesh struggles to contain the fallout, the unfolding events have exposed deep political, ideological and communal fault lines. Observers warn that unless swift action is taken to restore stability and protect minorities, the crisis could have long-term implications for internal security and regional relations.
