Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s new jersey number has a simple mathematical connection. The India fast bowler revealed that he wanted a number whose digits added up to six, explaining the logic behind his switch from the familiar number 15 to 78.
In an interview, Bhuvneshwar said he had considered several options, including 15, but other players had already taken some of his preferred numbers. He eventually settled on 78 because its digits total six. He also admitted that he had become accustomed to seeing 15 on his jersey.
“I wanted the total to add up to six,” Bhuvneshwar explained, describing how he arrived at the new number.
The adjustment extended beyond the number itself. The pacer said he initially found it unusual to have “Kumar” printed on the back of his jersey, taking time to get comfortable wearing it.
How the IPL Has Changed Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Beyond his jersey choice, Bhuvneshwar discussed how T20 cricket has evolved, particularly through the influence of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The pacer believes the tournament has played a significant role in his development as a cricketer. With batters increasingly adopting aggressive strategies, bowlers have had to rethink their approach and find new ways to control matches.
The Impact Player rule has further encouraged attacking batting, with teams often looking to score quickly from the opening delivery. However, Bhuvneshwar rejected the idea that bowlers are simply victims of the format’s changing demands.
He argued that bowlers can still dictate terms by controlling their lengths, reading batters’ intentions and directing shots towards areas where they want the opposition to play.
Why 200 Runs Is No Longer Always Enough
Bhuvneshwar also highlighted the dramatic increase in scoring across T20 cricket. According to the India pacer, the transformation extends beyond franchise tournaments to international matches as well.
He observed that totals of 200 runs, once considered imposing, are increasingly treated as competitive par scores. In some matches, even reaching that mark may not guarantee a winning position.
For Bhuvneshwar, the solution lies in adapting rather than accepting that modern T20 cricket belongs exclusively to batters. His perspective reflects a belief that discipline, strategy and execution remain crucial even as scoring rates continue to rise.
While his jersey number 78 came from a straightforward calculation, his philosophy on bowling is more nuanced: successful bowlers must evolve with the game while continuing to find ways to control the contest.
