The NCERT Computational Thinking and AI module aims to equip students in Classes 9 to 12 with foundational knowledge of artificial intelligence and systematic problem-solving. Developed under the Ministry of Education, the module is designed for diverse school environments, including institutions with limited access to digital tools.
The initiative does not require students to have prior knowledge of a specific subject. Instead, it focuses on building critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills while helping learners understand how artificial intelligence works, where it is used in everyday life, and what its capabilities and limitations are.
The module also seeks to prepare students to engage thoughtfully with emerging technologies as AI becomes increasingly relevant to education and daily activities.
Activity-Based Learning at the Centre
NCERT has adopted an experiential, activity-based approach to teaching computational thinking and artificial intelligence. The module includes discussions, practical exercises, experiments and self-reflection activities to help students understand concepts through participation.
Importantly, these activities can be conducted with or without digital tools. This approach is intended to make the learning material accessible to schools with different levels of technological infrastructure.
Computational thinking is presented as a structured method of identifying problems and developing systematic solutions. Students are also introduced to practical applications of AI, helping them connect classroom concepts with real-world situations.
AI Safety, Privacy and Ethical Use
A key component of the module focuses on the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence. Students will explore issues such as data privacy, misinformation, fairness and digital security.
The material also emphasises the importance of critically checking information generated by AI systems. Rather than accepting automated responses at face value, students are encouraged to assess their accuracy and reliability.
Human judgement, creativity and ethical responsibility remain central to the module's approach to technology-enabled learning. These principles are intended to help students recognise both the benefits and risks associated with AI tools.
Link With National Education Policy 2020
The initiative aligns with the priorities of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises technological awareness and the development of essential 21st-century skills.
By introducing computational thinking, AI literacy and ethical awareness at the secondary-school level, NCERT aims to help students understand emerging technologies and use them responsibly.
The module represents an effort to make foundational AI education more accessible while encouraging learners to approach technology with curiosity, critical thinking and an awareness of its limitations.
