BJP and Congress Join Hands in Maharashtra Civic Body, Trigger Political Shockwaves

In a rare and politically striking development, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress have come together to form the ruling dispensation in the Ambernath Municipal Council in Maharashtra. The unexpected alliance has effectively kept the Shiv Sena, led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, out of power in the civic body.

The political realignment has resulted in the election of BJP councillor Tejashree Karanjule as mayor, backed by a combined strength of 32 councillors. The alliance includes 16 councillors from the BJP, 12 from the Congress, and four from the Nationalist Congress Party, giving the grouping a comfortable majority in the municipal council.

The move has generated intense reactions across Maharashtra’s political spectrum, particularly within the Shiv Sena, which currently shares power with the BJP at the state level. Leaders from the Shinde-led faction expressed sharp disapproval, describing the partnership between the BJP and Congress as ideologically contradictory and politically opportunistic.

A senior Shiv Sena leader from the Shinde camp described the alliance as an “unholy arrangement,” accusing the BJP of abandoning its long-stated political stance against the Congress. The leader alleged that the tie-up amounted to a betrayal of alliance ethics, especially given the BJP’s repeated national positioning as an opponent of the Congress.

The BJP, however, has strongly defended its decision, arguing that the alliance was driven by local political realities rather than ideological considerations. Party leaders stated that efforts were made to arrive at a consensus with the Shiv Sena in Ambernath, but claimed that talks failed due to a lack of cooperation at the local level.

BJP representatives further countered the Shiv Sena’s criticism by alleging long-standing governance issues in the civic body under previous arrangements. According to them, the alliance was formed to ensure administrative stability and effective governance in the municipal council, rather than to make a political statement at the state or national level.

The Congress, while extending support to the new mayor, has largely maintained silence on the broader political implications of the partnership. Local Congress leaders have not issued any detailed public explanation, adding to speculation about whether the alliance was a tactical move limited to the municipal level or a sign of evolving political equations in Maharashtra’s urban local bodies.

Political observers note that while such alliances are not unprecedented at the municipal level, a BJP–Congress partnership remains highly unusual due to the sharp ideological rivalry between the two parties nationally. The development has reignited debate over the flexibility of political alignments in local governance and the growing disconnect between national rhetoric and grassroots political strategies.

The Ambernath episode has also raised questions about the stability of existing alliances within Maharashtra. While the BJP and Shiv Sena continue to govern together at the state level, the civic body outcome has exposed underlying tensions and competing interests within the ruling coalition.

As Maharashtra prepares for future local and state-level political contests, the Ambernath Municipal Council alliance is being closely watched as a case study in pragmatic politics, one that underscores how local power equations can override long-standing ideological divides.
