If you've recently logged into the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) portal and noticed that the UAN activation option is missing, you're not alone.
Following a major technology upgrade, EPFO has officially shifted UAN activation and new UAN generation services from its Unified Member Portal to the UMANG app. The move is part of the organisation's effort to improve security, speed and user verification through Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.
The change means members can no longer activate their Universal Account Number (UAN) directly through the EPFO website.
After restoring its Unified Member Portal following nearly a week of maintenance and system upgrades, EPFO introduced a new process for UAN-related services.
Instead of completing UAN activation on the portal, users must now use the UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) app.
The new system is designed to strengthen identity verification and reduce the risk of fraud by integrating Aadhaar Face Authentication technology.
The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a unique 12-digit identification number allotted to every EPF member.
It links multiple Provident Fund (PF) accounts under a single identity, allowing employees to:
Without an activated UAN, members cannot access many online EPFO services.
If your UAN is not activated, follow these steps:
Install the UMANG app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
Sign in using your registered mobile number.
Search for "EPFO" within the UMANG app.
Choose the option for UAN activation or new UAN generation.
Verify your identity using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication as instructed on the app.
Once verification is successful, your UAN will be activated.
EPFO has increasingly adopted Aadhaar-based digital verification to improve security.
Face Authentication offers several advantages:
The system also reduces dependence on OTP-based verification in certain cases.
The recent EPFO system upgrade aims to provide:
The organisation expects these changes to make digital services smoother for millions of subscribers.
If you're unable to find UAN activation on the EPFO portal, there's no technical issue with your account.
The service has simply been moved to the UMANG app.
Members who already have an activated UAN can continue using other EPFO online services normally, while new users and those requiring activation must complete the process through UMANG.
EPFO has shifted UAN activation and new UAN generation services from its Unified Member Portal to the UMANG app. Members must now complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication to activate their Universal Account Number.
EPFO's latest digital upgrade marks a significant change in how members access UAN-related services. By moving UAN activation to the UMANG app and introducing Aadhaar Face Authentication, the organisation aims to strengthen security while simplifying identity verification. Members attempting to activate a UAN should now complete the process through UMANG rather than the EPFO portal.
1. Why can't I activate my UAN on the EPFO portal?
EPFO has shifted UAN activation services to the UMANG app after upgrading its portal.
2. Where can I activate my UAN now?
You must use the UMANG app.
3. Is Aadhaar Face Authentication compulsory?
Yes. Face Authentication is required for UAN activation and generation through UMANG.
4. Can I still access other EPFO services on the portal?
Yes. Existing services remain available for members with activated UANs.
5. Do I need the UMANG app for new UAN generation?
Yes. Both UAN activation and new UAN generation now take place through UMANG.
6. Why did EPFO make this change?
The organisation says the move improves security, speed and reliability through enhanced digital verification.
