Chitradurga Bus Fire: 5 Killed After Bengaluru–Gokarna Sleeper Collides With Truck

At least five people were killed after a private sleeper bus travelling from Bengaluru to Gokarna caught fire following a collision with a container lorry in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district early Thursday, police said.

Inspector General of Police (Eastern Range) Ravi Kanthe Gowda clarified the death toll amid initial confusion, confirming that five bodies had been recovered from the charred remains of the vehicle. “So far we could recover four bodies… four plus one, five,” he said while briefing the media.

The accident occurred around 2 am when the Bengaluru–Gokarna sleeper bus rammed into a container truck on the highway near Chitradurga. The impact triggered a massive fire, leaving several passengers trapped inside. Fire and emergency services rushed to the spot, but the blaze had already engulfed large portions of the bus.

A survivor, identified as Aditya, said passengers were asleep when the collision took place, adding that the fire spread rapidly after the crash, giving little time for many to escape.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased. The injured will also receive financial assistance, officials said.

Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, including whether speeding or driver fatigue played a role. Traffic movement on the stretch was temporarily disrupted as rescue and clearance operations continued.

Authorities said further details would be shared once forensic and mechanical inspections of the vehicles are completed.
