Daayra Box Office Day 1: Kareena Kapoor Film Opens Behind Vibe

Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra, starring Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj Sukumaran, has recorded a muted opening at the Indian box office. The crime thriller, which arrived in cinemas on September 18, earned an estimated Rs 90 lakh nett on its first day.

The film was screened across 2,238 shows in India and recorded an overall occupancy of around 11.65 per cent on Friday. Its Hindi version accounted for most of the opening collection, while the Malayalam release contributed only a small amount.

Daayra is also sharing the box office spotlight with Kunal Kemmu’s directorial Vibe, which released on the same day. Starring Kemmu, Preity Zinta and Sparsh Shrivastava, Vibe reportedly collected around Rs 1.50 crore nett on its opening day, putting it ahead of Daayra in the initial figures.

The film, written by Yash Keswani, Sima Agarwal and Meghna Gulzar, is inspired by true events and explores themes involving justice, the legal system and women facing institutional failures. Jitendra Joshi, Kshitee Jog, Kanwaljeet Singh, Sandeep Kulkarni and Trupti Khamkar also feature in supporting roles.

With both films starting modestly, the weekend figures will determine whether either release can turn the opening-day curiosity into stronger theatrical momentum. Bollywood, meanwhile, has apparently decided that Friday night needs two competing films and one collective box-office anxiety session.
