The Tamil Nadu film subsidy programme received a major boost on Diwali as Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay released Rs 15.68 crore in financial assistance for producers of 224 Tamil films. The announcement was made at an event in Chepauk, Chennai, clearing funds that had reportedly remained pending for seven years.
Each selected producer received a cheque of Rs 7 lakh. The assistance is intended to support low-budget Tamil cinema and provide relief to families whose livelihoods depend on film production.
The subsidy was distributed by Minister Rajmohan Arumugam during the event.
Producer T Siva Calls Subsidy a Diwali Gift
Producer T Siva of Amma Creations welcomed the government's decision and thanked Chief Minister Vijay and Minister Rajmohan for facilitating the release of the funds.
In a post on X, Siva described the assistance as a fresh beginning for 224 producers and their families. He said the financial support was particularly important for people who had lost their livelihoods because of film production.
According to Siva, around 90 per cent of the beneficiaries were individuals who had faced livelihood difficulties linked to the industry. He said the subsidy could help bring renewed hope to affected families.
Siva has backed films including Deiva Vaakku, Aravindhan, Saroja and Aravaan under the Amma Creations banner.
Films Produced Between 2015 and 2022 Selected
The films eligible for the subsidy were produced between 2015 and 2022. Their selection followed recommendations from a committee headed by retired Justice SK Krishnan, according to the report.
The scheme aims to encourage low-budget Tamil films, particularly productions dealing with socially relevant subjects.
During the event, Minister Rajmohan reportedly referred to Bharathiraja's 1994 film Karuththamma, which addressed female infanticide, as an example of cinema that can raise awareness about social issues.
He also appreciated producers who prioritise meaningful storytelling alongside commercial considerations.
Tamil Cinema Awards to Be Based on Merit
The minister further stated that Tamil cinema awards would, going forward, be presented solely on the basis of merit and honesty.
The release of the long-pending subsidy marks a financial support measure for selected producers, while the government's stated focus remains on encouraging meaningful and low-budget filmmaking in Tamil Nadu.
