England produced a clinical all-round performance to defeat India by four wickets in the second ODI at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, levelling the three-match series 1-1 ahead of the decisive clash at Lord's.
Chasing 234, Joe Root anchored England's innings with a composed 99 not out, guiding the hosts home with 20 balls to spare. Although he narrowly missed a century, Root's match-winning knock ensured England bounced back strongly after losing the series opener.
England's chase got off to the worst possible start as Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Ben Duckett with the very first ball of the innings.
Soon after, Prasidh Krishna removed Jacob Bethell, leaving England struggling at 11/2.
However, Root once again demonstrated why he remains one of the world's finest ODI batters. The experienced right-hander steadied the innings with crucial partnerships alongside Harry Brook, Will Jacks and Sam Curran, rotating the strike brilliantly while punishing loose deliveries.
Root remained unbeaten on 99, becoming the first England batter to finish an ODI innings stranded on 99 not out.
The chase was completed when Gus Atkinson struck a six off Bumrah, denying Root the opportunity to reach a deserved century.
Earlier, England's pace attack laid the foundation for victory after dismissing India for 233 in 44 overs.
