The possibility of Awarapan 3 has sparked curiosity among fans following the release of Awarapan 2, but writer Bilal Siddiqui has clarified that the third instalment is not currently in development.
Siddiqui said the ending of Awarapan 2 was designed in a way that could allow Emraan Hashmi's character, Shivam, to continue his journey. However, he stressed that there is no story for Awarapan 3 yet and no work has begun on the project.
The sequel, which brings back the character from the 2007 cult film Awarapan, has also found an audience among younger viewers, with nostalgia-driven moments and Shivam's emotional journey emerging as key talking points.
Awarapan 3 has no story yet
Speaking about the possibility of another sequel, Siddiqui said the makers had left room at the end of Awarapan 2 for the story to move forward if they chose to explore it.
However, he made it clear that Awarapan 3 remains only a possibility at this stage.
According to Siddiqui, producer Vishesh Films could decide to take Shivam's journey forward, especially given the character's continued popularity among fans. But no screenplay or story has been developed for a third film so far.
The future of the franchise will depend on whether the makers decide to revisit the character and develop a new story around him.
Why Shivam returned in Awarapan 2
Siddiqui said he approached Awarapan 2 as a fan of the original film and never believed the franchise should remain untouched simply because the first instalment had achieved cult status.
The biggest challenge, however, was finding a believable way to continue Shivam's journey without merely repeating the story of the 2007 film.
The writing process reportedly involved months of discussions before the screenplay was finalised. Siddiqui said the creative team explored several possibilities before settling on a story that could bring Shivam into a new world while maintaining a connection with the original film.
The sequel was also shaped around a broader vision for the character, allowing Shivam to evolve beyond the man audiences saw in the first film.
Fan expectations shaped the sequel
One of the major challenges for the makers was balancing nostalgia with a fresh story.
Siddiqui said fan expectations played an important role in deciding which elements of the original Awarapan needed to return. Among them was the emotional connection between Shivam and God, along with the song Tera Mera Rishta Purana.
Rather than continuing the exact storyline of the first film, the makers focused on carrying forward Shivam as a character.
This allowed Awarapan 2 to function as a continuation for existing fans while also being designed as a standalone story for viewers who may not have watched the original.
Nostalgia moments struck a chord with audiences
The sequel has generated discussion around several nostalgia-driven moments, particularly sequences connected to Tera Mera Rishta.
According to Siddiqui, audience reactions shared through social media and theatre videos showed viewers singing along and applauding during key scenes.
The response highlighted the continuing emotional connection audiences have with the original Awarapan, which was released in 2007 and later developed a strong cult following.
For the makers, these moments were intended to reward longtime fans while fitting organically into the new story.
Why Awarapan 2 connected with Gen Z
Interestingly, Siddiqui said Awarapan 2 was not specifically written for Gen Z or any particular age group.
The focus, he said, was on creating a contemporary crime drama with a fast-paced narrative.
While the original film had more space for emotional pauses, Awarapan 2 was designed to move with greater speed and urgency. The makers wanted the film to work as a modern thriller while retaining the emotional identity associated with Shivam's character.
That approach appears to have helped the sequel connect with younger audiences, including viewers who may not have seen the original film.
What could happen in Awarapan 3?
For now, there is no confirmation that Awarapan 3 will be made.
But the ending of Awarapan 2 appears to have deliberately left Shivam's future open. If the makers decide to continue the franchise, a third instalment could explore the character's next chapter and potentially take him into a completely new story.
As of now, however, fans will have to wait. Siddiqui has confirmed that no story has been finalised and no work on Awarapan 3 has begun.
Awarapan 2, starring Emraan Hashmi as Shivam and directed by Nitin Kakkar, was released on August 14, 2026.
