Duleep Trophy Final: Tilak Varma Stranded After Vijay Run-Out as South Zone Lose 8th Wicket

East Zone tightened their grip on the Duleep Trophy 2026 final against South Zone in Chennai after another dramatic run-out left Tilak Varma stranded at the crease on Day 4.

South Zone resumed their first innings under immense pressure after East Zone posted a massive 708 runs. Tilak Varma continued to lead the resistance, but wickets at the other end kept South Zone from mounting a meaningful comeback.

Tripurana Vijay became South Zone's eighth wicket after a costly mix-up in the middle. The run-out came during an attempt to ensure Tilak retained the strike, but hesitation between the two batters left Vijay stranded outside his crease.

Vijay was dismissed for just one run off 12 balls, leaving South Zone at 322 for eight after 102 overs. Tilak Varma remained unbeaten on 87 and continued to be South Zone's biggest hope of extending the innings.

Earlier in the session, Chama Milind's fighting knock came to an end after he was dismissed for 43. Milind had provided valuable support to Tilak Varma as the pair attempted to delay East Zone's push for a first-innings lead.

South Zone had crossed the 300-run mark during the morning session, but the massive target of 708 remained well out of reach. East Zone's bowlers continued to maintain pressure as the South Zone lower order struggled to support their captain.

Tilak Varma's determined innings followed his unbeaten half-century on Day 3, when South Zone ended the day at 242 for six, trailing East Zone by 466 runs. Mohammed Shami and Mukesh Kumar had played key roles in putting South Zone under pressure earlier in the final.

East Zone entered the final with a commanding advantage after captain Ishan Kishan produced a monumental 270-run innings to help his side reach 708 in their first innings. The huge total has kept South Zone under pressure throughout the match.

With South Zone eight wickets down and still trailing heavily, East Zone remain firmly in control of the Duleep Trophy final. Tilak Varma's resistance has given South Zone something to fight for, but the remaining wickets could determine how soon East Zone secure the crucial first-innings lead and strengthen their claim for the title.
