IIT Kanpur Professor Shantanu Bhattacharya Elected NASI Fellow for Scientific Contributions

Professor Shantanu Bhattacharya from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kanpur has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI). The fellowship will take effect from January 1, 2027, and recognises his significant scientific contributions.

IIT Kanpur congratulated Bhattacharya on the recognition and highlighted his research in functional materials and their fabrication across different length scales. His work spans several interdisciplinary areas, connecting engineering, nanotechnology, healthcare, water treatment and energy applications.

According to IIT Kanpur, his research interests include Bio MEMS, Lab on Chip technologies, nanotechnology, microfluidic system design and fabrication, sensors, acoustic metamaterials, water remediation and energy storage devices.

Bhattacharya's research reflects the growing role of advanced materials and microsystems in addressing practical challenges. His work covers technologies ranging from miniaturised systems and sensors to methods for water remediation and energy storage.

He is currently serving as Director of CSIR-Central Scientific Instruments Organisation in Chandigarh. He also holds the additional responsibility of Director at CSIR-Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute in Pilani.

Bhattacharya completed his PhD in 2006 from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in the United States. He earned an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University in 2003 and completed his BE in Industrial and Production Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering in 1996.

His election as a NASI Fellow adds another recognition to an academic and scientific career focused on functional materials, microsystems, microfluidics, sensors and technologies with applications in areas including clean water and energy.
