RGV and Mohit Suri’s Next Film to Explore Dawood-Chhota Rajan Split, 1993 Mumbai Blasts

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has revealed more details about his upcoming collaboration with director Mohit Suri, describing it as a crime drama set against the backdrop of the split between underworld figures Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan.

Varma said he has written the script for the project, while Suri has developed it further through his own filmmaking style. The story is set around the period when Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan separated, with a man named Sautya playing a key role in the events.

The film will also explore the aftermath of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts and the role of Indian intelligence agencies in events that followed. Varma said the project will combine a crime-driven narrative with emotional character development, music and realistic action.

According to Varma, Suri has taken the original script in a different direction by bringing his emphasis on emotionally driven characters, music and action to the story. The filmmaker has suggested that the resulting film will be both large in scale and grounded in its characters.

Varma also compared the collaboration to major filmmaker crossovers in Hollywood while highlighting the creative contribution of Suri. He expressed confidence that the project could become larger in scale than Dhurandhar while remaining more emotionally rooted than Satya.

The collaboration was first teased by Varma in an earlier social media post featuring himself with Suri. At the time, he described their partnership as a combination of romance and gangster elements, hinting at a story that would blend the two filmmakers’ distinctive approaches.

The project comes as Suri works on his next directorial venture following the commercial success of Saiyaara. Varma, meanwhile, continues to expand his upcoming slate, including the horror-comedy Police Station Mein Bhoot, which features Manoj Bajpayee.

The new crime drama is expected to bring together Varma’s long association with underworld stories and Suri’s focus on emotional storytelling, with the events surrounding the Dawood Ibrahim-Chhota Rajan split and the aftermath of the 1993 Mumbai blasts forming the central backdrop.
