India Targets 5 Chipmakers, 3 Materials Firms and 1 Lakh Semiconductor Jobs

India is targeting a semiconductor ecosystem featuring at least five large chip manufacturers, three major materials companies and two advanced packaging facilities, with the sector expected to create more than one lakh direct and indirect jobs, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said. The government’s semiconductor strategy goes beyond establishing fabrication plants and includes equipment, specialised materials, packaging, chip design and skilled talent.

Vaishnaw said the programme, launched in 2021, was designed as a long-term effort rather than a short-term manufacturing push. The government has mapped the wider supply chain and worked with potential suppliers to develop supporting capabilities. India currently has semiconductor manufacturing capabilities around the 40nm node, while the government is targeting more advanced 7nm and 3nm technologies over the next eight years.

The minister said around 85,000 semiconductor engineers have already been trained, while universities are being involved in expanding industry-focused education. The ecosystem has also attracted around 30 venture capital firms and 205 startups, according to Vaishnaw.

The semiconductor drive is closely linked to India’s expanding electronics manufacturing industry, with chips increasingly required in automobiles, phones, consumer electronics, aircraft and other sectors. The government expects manufacturing facilities to generate additional employment through suppliers, materials companies and equipment makers. Its broader objective is to establish a commercially sustainable semiconductor supply chain capable of operating at global scale.
