Neeraj Chopra Throws Season-Best 88.05m in Lausanne, Misses Diamond League Win by 9cm

Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra appears to be finding his rhythm at the right time.

Chopra delivered a season-best throw of 88.05 metres at the Lausanne Diamond League, finishing second in a fiercely contested men's javelin event. He narrowly missed the top spot as Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage threw 88.14m, edging the Indian athlete by just nine centimetres.

The result marked Chopra's strongest performance of the season and his first throw beyond the 88-metre mark since June 2025.

Neeraj Chopra Says He Is Coming Back

After the competition, Chopra said he was pleased with the distance and felt his performance reflected a gradual return to form.

"With every competition, I feel that I'm coming back."

The Indian star said his 88.05m effort felt relaxed, suggesting that he is becoming increasingly comfortable with his technique after a challenging period involving injury and changes within his coaching setup.

Chopra's performance in Lausanne is particularly significant with the Asian Games approaching next month, where he will look to build on his strong record in international competition.

A Close Battle in Lausanne

Chopra began his series with a throw of 83.54m, while Pathirage took an early lead with 85.99m. Two-time world champion Anderson Peters later moved ahead of Chopra with an 86.69m effort.

However, Chopra soon responded with his best throw of the evening.

The 88.05m attempt briefly moved him into first place and showcased encouraging improvements in his technique and balance. Pathirage, however, responded with an 88.14m throw to reclaim the lead.

The margin between the two athletes was just 0.09 metres.

Rumesh Pathirage Continues Strong Run

The Lausanne result was Pathirage's third consecutive victory over Chopra in 2026. The Sri Lankan javelin thrower had previously finished ahead of the Indian star in Doha and again at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Despite narrowly missing out on the Diamond League victory, Chopra's focus will likely be on the bigger picture.

His season-best performance suggests that the Olympic medallist is steadily regaining consistency ahead of one of the biggest competitions of the year.

Asian Games Preparation Gets a Timely Boost

For Chopra, the 88.05m throw is more than just a second-place finish.

It represents his best performance of the 2026 season and offers a positive indication that his form is improving as the Asian Games draw closer. The Indian javelin star will now look to carry this momentum into the final phase of his preparations.

After coming within nine centimetres of victory in Lausanne, Chopra's message remains clear: with every competition, he believes he is getting closer to his best.
