The India vs Japan Asian Champions Trophy 2026 final promises a competitive showdown as the hosts look to secure another continental title at the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior Hockey Stadium in Mohali on Thursday, November 5.
Led by Harmanpreet Singh, India have dominated much of the tournament and will enter the final as favourites. However, Japan have already demonstrated that they can disrupt the hosts' attacking rhythm and will aim to produce another strong performance in front of the home crowd.
India have scored 34 goals in their first five round-robin matches, conceding only five. Their attacking strength was also evident in the semi-final, where they scored eight goals against South Korea.
The title would provide a strong finish to India's 2026 season after disappointing campaigns in the Hockey Pro League and the World Cup. The team has already achieved its major target of winning Asian Games gold and securing direct qualification for the 2028 Olympics.
Japan Have Exposed India's Vulnerabilities
Despite India's dominant campaign, Japan have emerged as their most challenging opponents.
During the league-stage meeting, Japan troubled the hosts for nearly 47 minutes. Their aggressive high press disrupted India's passing game, forced turnovers and prevented the home side from finding its usual attacking rhythm.
Japan also managed to equalise after India scored first, briefly raising the possibility of an upset. India eventually recovered to secure victory, but the contest demonstrated that Japan could challenge the tournament favourites.
Japan have built momentum through disciplined performances. They began with a 3-2 win over South Korea and followed it with a 1-0 victory against Bangladesh.
They also defeated Malaysia 2-1 in the league stage before reaching the final through a penalty shootout after a 5-5 draw in the semi-final.
Japan captain Raiki Fujishima said his team intended to play bravely and attack aggressively, regardless of the home crowd.
Craig Fulton Wants India to Stick to Basics
India head coach Craig Fulton has emphasised the importance of maintaining structure, defending well and taking scoring opportunities.
"We want a fast start, and that's how we want to set it up," Fulton said, while acknowledging Japan's quality.
India also have a fitness concern surrounding forward Abhishek, who twisted his ankle during the match against Malaysia. Although he warmed up before the semi-final and remained in the squad, he did not play.
Fulton said the team would avoid rushing his recovery, adding that the forward would be given more time before a decision on his availability.
India vs Japan: Head-to-Head Record
India have historically dominated their meetings with Japan. Since 2013, Japan have defeated India only three times, with their most recent victory coming in 2022.
India have won 27 of their 32 encounters, while two matches have ended in draws.
