India–Russia Summit Highlights Su-57 Talks, Defence Expansion and Rupee-Ruble Trade Push

The India–Russia Annual Summit gained significant strategic weight this year as President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi for high-level talks focused on defence cooperation, fighter jet integration, and bilateral trade mechanisms.

In this special broadcast, defence expert Major Manik Jolly analysed the geopolitical stakes surrounding the visit, stating that recent US pressure and tariff actions under President Donald Trump have unintentionally driven India to strengthen its engagement with Russia and China. He argued that global power realignments are pushing New Delhi to pursue deeper strategic autonomy.

A ground report by Shivani Sharma from Rashtrapati Bhavan covered the ceremonial welcome accorded to President Putin, highlighting the symbolism and diplomatic choreography surrounding the summit.

Among the most critical agenda items is the possible integration of Russia’s fifth-generation Su-57 fighter jets into the Indian Air Force, a development that could transform India’s air combat capabilities. Discussions are also expected on the ongoing procurement and potential future collaboration around the S-400 air defence system, as well as exploratory talks on the advanced S-500 platform.

Economic cooperation is another major focus area. Officials from both nations are expected to prioritise efforts to strengthen the rupee-ruble settlement mechanism, aimed at bypassing Western financial systems and safeguarding bilateral trade from global sanctions and currency disruptions.

The summit reflects India’s goal of maintaining strategic balance while deepening its long-standing partnership with Russia across defence, energy, space, and trade sectors.
