Indian Nurse Sentenced in Singapore for Molesting Hospital Visitor

An Indian nurse at Singapore’s Raffles Hospital has been sentenced to 14 months in jail and two strokes of the cane for molesting a male visitor, authorities said.

Incident Details

The 34-year-old nurse, Elipe Siva Nagu, committed the offence in June while the victim was visiting his grandfather at the hospital on North Bridge Road. According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Eugene Phua, Nagu molested the visitor under the pretext of wanting to “disinfect” him, applying soap to his hands during the act.

The victim, shocked by the incident, did not resist and later returned to his grandfather’s bedside. Court documents noted that the victim continues to experience flashbacks from the incident, highlighting its psychological impact.

Legal Proceedings

Elipe Siva Nagu was arrested two days after the incident and suspended from his nursing duties. After pleading guilty, the court sentenced him to 14 months imprisonment and two strokes of the cane, reflecting Singapore’s strict stance on molestation and sexual assault.

Singapore’s Approach to Molestation

Singapore enforces stringent penalties for sexual offences, including corporal punishment such as caning for male offenders, alongside jail terms. This case demonstrates the country’s rigorous approach to protecting visitors and maintaining safety in healthcare settings.

The case also serves as a reminder for hospitals to ensure strict supervision and vetting of staff to prevent abuse and protect patients and visitors.
