IPL 2026: BCCI Directs KKR to Release Mustafizur Rahman, Allows Replacement Signing

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has asked Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. The decision brings an end to days of uncertainty surrounding the pacer’s participation in the tournament.

The development was confirmed by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who stated that the board had formally instructed the franchise to part ways with the Bangladesh international in view of recent developments. He also clarified that the board would permit KKR to sign a replacement player if the franchise chooses to do so.

Mustafizur Rahman was the only Bangladesh cricketer to secure an IPL contract at the 2026 mini-auction held in December 2025. KKR had acquired the left-arm pacer for Rs 9.20 crore after a competitive bidding process, with expectations that he would strengthen the team’s overseas bowling options. However, the signing soon became the centre of a growing controversy.

Following the auction, objections were raised from certain political quarters and religious groups over the inclusion of a Bangladeshi player in the league, particularly in matches scheduled to be played in Kolkata. The criticism intensified amid heightened diplomatic and social tensions linked to incidents of violence against minorities in Bangladesh, which had already drawn concern in India.

As public debate around the issue escalated, pressure mounted on both the franchise and the cricket board to respond. While the BCCI refrained from making public statements initially, the board is understood to have closely monitored the situation before stepping in to prevent further escalation ahead of the new IPL season.

The instruction to release Mustafizur is being viewed as a precautionary decision rather than a purely cricketing one. The BCCI has not issued any comment directly addressing the political reactions but has indicated that the broader circumstances surrounding the controversy were taken into account.

From a sporting standpoint, the decision creates a vacancy in KKR’s overseas pace department. Mustafizur, known for his deceptive slower deliveries and effectiveness in limited-overs formats, was expected to play an important role, especially on subcontinental pitches. His absence will now force the franchise to reassess its bowling combination before the season begins.

However, the BCCI has made it clear that KKR will not be disadvantaged by the decision. The franchise has been given approval to approach the board for a replacement signing, ensuring squad balance is maintained.

With IPL 2026 scheduled to begin in March, teams are expected to finalise their combinations in the coming weeks.
