Actor Jaya Bhattacharya, widely recognised for her role as Payal in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, has spoken candidly about the trauma she lived through as a child. In a recent conversation with Siddharth Kannan, she described years of physical abuse at home, emotional neglect, and the impact of growing up in a deeply troubled household.
Jaya shared that her parents never wanted to marry and their strained relationship shaped her formative years. She revealed that her mother’s unfulfilled aspirations and bitterness often turned into episodes of violence. “I have been beaten with a hunter, rolling pin, tong, shoes — everything you can imagine. That made me stubborn, but it also damaged me,” she said, calling her birth as a girl her “biggest misfortune.”
Despite the turmoil, she felt a strong emotional bond with her father, though the environment she grew up in left lasting scars — teaching her to judge people harshly, undervalue herself, and navigate the world without support.
Although she is celebrated today for her television performances, acting was never her dream. Jaya revealed that she was pushed into the profession. She narrated how, after performing in a telefilm, she was taken to the shoot against her wishes. “I didn’t want to do it, but my father woke me up at 5 am and took me there. That’s how it began,” she said.
Her early years in the industry also brought unsettling encounters. Jaya recalled a casting-couch experience where a director’s friend began visiting her home frequently and later turned out to have mafia links. He even offered to take her to Mumbai, an offer she rejected.
Jaya eventually went on to become a prominent face in Indian television, known for strong antagonist roles in shows like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kasam Se, Jhansi Ki Rani, and Gangaa. But behind the fame lies a difficult journey marked by emotional wounds and survival.
