Filmmaker Karan Johar has expressed strong confidence in the resurgence of Hindi cinema, declaring that “Bollywood is back” following the blockbuster success of Border 2 and Dhurandhar. Johar credited the films’ emotional resonance with paying audiences as the key factor behind their remarkable box office performance.
Sharing his views through social media, Johar stated that the back-to-back success of these two large-scale Hindi films signals a decisive shift for the industry. He emphasised that when films strike an emotional chord, audiences respond decisively, dismissing scepticism surrounding the theatrical viability of mainstream Hindi cinema.
Johar highlighted that both films have managed to engage viewers beyond spectacle, tapping into emotion-driven storytelling. According to him, commercial success follows naturally when audiences feel genuinely connected to the narrative, characters, and underlying themes. He added that criticism and pessimism surrounding the industry tend to fade when theatres fill up and films perform strongly at the box office.
Border 2, which released on January 23, has emerged as one of the year’s biggest openers. The war drama, inspired by the 1971 India–Pakistan conflict, focuses on the courage and sacrifice of the Indian armed forces. The film stars Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Ahan Shetty, and Diljit Dosanjh. Within just three days of release, it crossed significant domestic and global box office milestones, reaffirming the enduring appeal of patriotic storytelling in Indian cinema.
Dhurandhar, led by Ranveer Singh, has also enjoyed an extraordinary run since its release in December. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, and R Madhavan, the film has delivered massive numbers both in India and overseas. Its success has already paved the way for a sequel, reflecting sustained audience interest in large-scale action dramas with strong character arcs.
Johar also addressed online criticism faced by Varun Dhawan in the lead-up to Border 2’s release. He remarked that social media narratives often fail to reflect real audience sentiment, adding that authentic audience response inside theatres ultimately determines a film’s success. According to Johar, box office results remain the most reliable indicator of an artist’s impact, regardless of online trolling or click-driven commentary.
His remarks come at a time when the Hindi film industry is witnessing renewed momentum, with theatrical releases once again drawing large crowds and generating substantial revenues. Industry observers see this trend as a sign that audiences are returning to cinemas for emotionally engaging, high-scale storytelling.
By backing Border 2 and Dhurandhar, Johar reinforced the belief that Hindi cinema’s revival lies in combining scale with sincerity. As theatres continue to see packed houses, the success of these films is being viewed as a turning point, suggesting that Bollywood’s connection with its core audience is strengthening once again.
