IPL-Style Indian Pickleball League Sparks Sporting Revolution in India

Pickleball, one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, is now making serious inroads into India. The movement gained fresh momentum on December 1 with the inauguration of the Indian Pickleball League (IPBL) at New Delhi’s KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium — a franchise-style tournament designed to replicate the popularity and commercial model of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Pickleball’s rise in India mirrors a broader trend where franchise-based leagues across sports — cricket, kabaddi, football, table tennis and arm wrestling — have redefined viewership and athlete pipelines. With IPBL, organisers hope to channel this momentum and fuel the sport’s rapid grassroots expansion.

A Six-Team, IPL-Inspired Format

An initiative backed by the Times Group, the IPBL features six city-based franchises:

  • Mumbai Smashers

  • Chennai Super Warriors

  • Lucknow Leopards

  • Bengaluru Blasters

  • Hyderabad Royals

  • Capital Warriors Gurgaon

Over six days of league matches from December 1 to 5, teams will battle through three daily fixtures. This will be followed by a Qualifier, two Eliminators (December 6) and the grand final on December 7. An All-Star showcase will also be held on the final day.

The league hopes to merge competitive talent with entertainment — a formula that has worked remarkably well in cricket and kabaddi.

A Push for Wider Adoption

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the league, calling Pickleball a sport with the potential to take root across India’s schools and youth circuits.

“Bharat has always been a country of sports. Efforts will be made to include Pickleball in school-level activities and events,” she said.

Pickleball Federation of India President Sameer Pathak announced that 500 schoolchildren would attend matches, aiming to spark early interest in the next generation of athletes.

A Strong Start for the League

The tournament opened with a high-intensity match between Bengaluru Blasters and Lucknow Leopards, evoking nostalgia among fans — especially since Bengaluru also played the opening game of the inaugural IPL season in 2008.

Early gameplay showcased fast rallies, athleticism and competitive spirit, signalling that the IPBL may soon redefine India’s engagement with Pickleball.

A 60-Year Journey, A New Chapter in India

From being invented in 1965 as a children’s backyard sport in Washington, USA, Pickleball has transformed into a global phenomenon. Its arrival as a full-fledged franchise league in India marks an important milestone in that journey.

With professional teams, corporate backing and government support, the Indian Pickleball League could become the spark that mainstreams the sport across the country — and positions India as a strong player in the international Pickleball ecosystem.
