Kashmir Curbs: Lal Chowk Sealed, Schools Closed After Protests Over Khamenei Report

Authorities in Srinagar have imposed restrictions across key areas of the city following protests over reports of the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The situation has led to preventive measures, including sealing of Lal Chowk and temporary closure of educational institutions across the Kashmir Valley.

Security forces sealed the iconic Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) at Lal Chowk to prevent public gatherings and demonstrations. Barricades were placed at multiple entry points, and access to the area was restricted as part of efforts to maintain law and order.

Officials ordered all schools and educational institutions in the Kashmir Valley to remain closed for two days as a precautionary step. The University of Kashmir also postponed its ongoing examinations, citing the prevailing situation. Authorities said the move was necessary to ensure student safety and avoid disruptions amid the tense atmosphere.

In addition to physical restrictions, mobile internet speeds were reduced across the Valley. Officials described the measure as preventive, aimed at limiting the spread of viral videos and protest visuals circulating online, which could further escalate tensions. Security has been tightened in several sensitive districts, and movement is being closely monitored.

Protests were reported in parts of the Valley, including Pulwama district, where groups gathered expressing anger over the reported killing. Demonstrators were seen holding portraits and raising slogans as security forces maintained vigil.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called for restraint and urged authorities to allow peaceful mourning. He emphasised that individuals expressing grief should be permitted to do so peacefully, without excessive use of force or unnecessary restrictions.

He also stated that the Government of Jammu and Kashmir is in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs to safeguard residents of the region who are currently in Iran. Officials said close monitoring of developments is ongoing.

The imposition of curbs in Srinagar reflects the sensitivity of international developments and their potential impact on local sentiments. Authorities continue to review the situation and have indicated that restrictions may be eased depending on ground conditions.

For now, security remains heightened, with administrative officials focusing on preventing unrest while maintaining public safety across the Kashmir Valley.
