Kerala Flood Alert: Six Districts on Orange Alert Amid Heavy Rain, Dams Release Water

Kerala is facing intense rainfall and flooding as heavy showers continue to lash high-range and low-lying areas across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for six districts — Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod — indicating very heavy rainfall of 11-20 cm in 24 hours. The remaining districts are under a yellow alert, signaling heavy rain between 6-11 cm.

Idukki district has been the worst affected, with flooding and mudslides reported in Nedumkandam, Kumily, and Kattappana. Several houses and shops were inundated, forcing authorities to shift residents to relief camps. The Mullaperiyar dam saw rising water levels, prompting the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department to open 13 spillway shutters by 100 cm, discharging 1,400 cusecs of water. Three other dams in the district are also releasing water to manage overflow.

Ernakulam experienced flooding near Ernakulam Junction railway station, where renovation work is ongoing, and the administration remains on high alert due to rising river levels. Other districts, including Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Kannur, have recorded heavy rainfall, with Malappuram reporting floodwaters in agricultural lands, causing crop damage.

Authorities have advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea, as rough weather conditions are expected to persist until October 22. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely, warning residents to take necessary precautions.
