KVS Still Has 10,000+ Vacancies Despite 33,000 Recruits Since 2014, Govt Tells Lok Sabha

The Ministry of Education has informed the Lok Sabha that more than 10,000 teaching and non-teaching posts remain vacant across Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) schools, even though over 33,000 appointments have been made in the past decade.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan shared updated data during a Lok Sabha session, outlining recruitment trends, vacancy positions, and the continued reliance on contractual staff across the KVS network.

10,173 Vacancies Across India’s KVS Schools

As of November 1, 2025, the total sanctioned strength across KVS stood at 56,520 posts. Of these:

  • 46,347 positions are filled

  • 10,173 remain vacant

Breakdown of vacancies:

CategorySanctionedFilledVacant

Non-teaching6,1064,3901,716

The Ministry attributed ongoing vacancies to the opening of new KVs, retirements, resignations, transfers, promotions, deputations, and school upgradations.

Over 33,000 Appointments Made Since 2014

Between 2014 and 2025, KVS recruited 33,350 staff, including teachers and non-teaching personnel.

Key recruitment years included 2015–16, 2016–17, 2017–18, and 2022–23, the last of which saw the highest intake:

  • 11,733 teaching posts

  • 614 non-teaching posts

Category-wise recruitment totals since 2014:

  • UR: 15,702

  • EWS: 1,233

  • OBC: 8,903

  • SC: 5,033

  • ST: 2,479

KVS Still Dependent on Contractual Teachers

Despite major recruitment efforts, KVS continues to rely on contractual teachers to maintain academic continuity.

Highest contractual appointments:

  • 2022–23: 10,462

  • 2024–25 (till date): 6,920

The Ministry clarified that contractual roles are temporary and vary by local requirement, and cannot be predetermined.

Reservation Policies Fully Implemented

All regular KVS recruitments follow reservation norms for EWS, OBC, SC, and ST categories.
However, contractual appointments—being temporary—do not fall under reservation guidelines.

Government Working to Address Teacher Shortage

The Ministry assured Parliament that efforts are underway to fill vacancies at the earliest. Contractual teachers will be phased out as regular staff join, ensuring the teaching-learning process remains uninterrupted.
