Lady Gaga has shared one of the most vulnerable chapters of her life, revealing that she was taking lithium for her mental health while filming the acclaimed film A Star Is Born. The singer-actor said the emotional intensity of the role, combined with the demands of her Joanne World Tour, eventually pushed her to a breaking point.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gaga admitted, “I did A Star Is Born on lithium,” adding that she continued performing on tour after the film wrapped. But by early 2018, she “completely crashed,” cancelling the remaining shows and seeking psychiatric care.
She recalled a pivotal moment when her sister told her she no longer recognised her. “There was one day I went to the hospital for psychiatric care. I needed to take a break. I couldn’t do anything; I completely crashed. It was really scary,” Gaga said, emphasising how close she felt to losing control. “I feel really lucky to be alive. That might sound dramatic, but we know how this can go.”
Gaga also spoke candidly about her future, sharing that motherhood is her biggest dream. She expressed deep affection for her long-time partner Michael Polansky, saying, “He is going to be a beautiful father. We’re really excited about that.”
The couple is also preparing for a wedding—one they intend to keep intimate and personal. Polansky told Rolling Stone, “We don’t want a really big wedding. We want to enjoy it. In many ways, we already feel married.”
Gaga and Polansky often share moments of their relationship online. In September, she posted a sentimental birthday message for him, describing a peaceful day filled with laughter, cake and long walks.
On the music front, Gaga’s latest album Mayhem—released earlier this year—has earned strong praise from fans and critics, marking another high point in her creative career despite the struggles she endured behind the scenes.
