Lakshya Sen Wins Australian Open 2025, Ends Title Drought With Dominant Sydney Final

Lakshya Sen capped a resurgent late-season run by lifting the Australian Open 2025 men’s singles title, ending his year-long wait for a trophy. The World No. 14 defeated Japan’s Yushi Tanaka 21–15, 21–11 in a commanding performance at the Super 500 event in Sydney on Sunday.

The final lasted only 38 minutes, with Lakshya displaying sharp control, pace and precision from the outset. His victory came less than 24 hours after a tiring 86-minute semifinal battle against second seed Chou Tien Chen, making the dominant finish even more impressive.

Celebrating the triumph, Lakshya struck his signature “shutting out the noise” gesture, before embracing coach Yoo Yong Sung and father D.K. Sen — who lifted him in an emotional moment courtside.

Clinical Display in the Final

Lakshya, known for his attacking flair, managed his aggression perfectly in the final. He kept Tanaka under constant pressure and dictated the rallies throughout both games. The second game, in particular, saw Lakshya accelerate with ease, racing to a 21–11 finish without allowing his opponent any room to recover.

The win capped a strong week in Sydney:

  • A hard-fought second-round win over Chi Yu Jen

  • A dominant quarter-final victory against Ayush Shetty

  • A dramatic three-game comeback over Chou Tien Chen in the semifinals

A Timely Return to Form

The title marks a significant turnaround for the Indian shuttler, who had struggled for consistency earlier this year while still recovering from the heartbreak of narrowly missing an Olympic medal in Paris 2024. With injury niggles and early tournament exits hindering his progress, Lakshya’s form had dipped.

However, he has finished 2025 strongly, adding the Australian Open trophy to a semifinal run at the Japan Masters and a quarter-final finish at the Hylo Open.

With major events like the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games lined up in 2026, Lakshya now aims to re-enter the top 10 and carry this momentum into a crucial season.
