The Lady Shri Ram College (LSR) Students’ Union has condemned remarks made by retired diplomat Deepak Vohra during a recent lecture, calling them “misogynistic” and “derogatory,” and has demanded a public apology.
The lecture, titled “Unstoppable India 2047” and held on September 11, was intended to discuss India’s future in policy and diplomacy. However, several comments made during the session were criticized by the student body for violating the college’s academic and ethical standards.
In particular, Vohra allegedly stated he would like to be “reborn as a man,” a remark reportedly made in response to the principal’s suggestion of experiencing LSR as a woman. The students’ union stated, “Such statements reflect a deeply ingrained misogyny and have no place in an academic institution. We demand a public apology from him.”
Additionally, a presentation slide titled “Bharat’s Four Azaadis” outlined milestones including the 1947 freedom of “our bodies,” 2022 freedom of “our minds” (Netaji statue), 2023 freedom of “our confidence” (Chandrayaan-3), and 2024 freedom of “our souls” (Ram temple). The framing of these milestones also drew debate among attendees regarding its relevance to the college audience.
The session, organized by the BA Programme Department, was intended to provide insights into India’s future, but students raised concerns over the appropriateness of certain remarks in a space meant to encourage inclusivity and respectful debate.
The LSR Students’ Union continues to call for a public apology and a reaffirmation of the college’s commitment to its core values.
