Malayalam Cinema Legend Sreenivasan Dies at 69 After Long Illness

Veteran Malayalam actor, writer and filmmaker Sreenivasan passed away at the age of 69 on Saturday at a private hospital in Thripunithura, Ernakulam. He had been battling prolonged health issues, according to sources close to the family.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Malayalam cinema, Sreenivasan’s career spanned nearly five decades, during which he left an indelible mark as an actor, screenwriter, director and producer. His work reshaped the industry’s approach to realism, social satire and middle-class narratives.

Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran expressed grief over the loss, calling Sreenivasan “one of the greatest writer-director-actors” Malayalam cinema has produced and thanking him for the laughter and thought-provoking stories he gave audiences.

Born on April 6, 1956, in Patyam near Thalassery in Kerala, Sreenivasan pursued economics before formally training in cinema at the Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu, Chennai. His academic grounding and creative sensibility later shaped his distinctive storytelling voice.

As an actor, Sreenivasan appeared in over 225 films, becoming synonymous with sharply observed characters rooted in everyday life. His performances, often understated yet powerful, resonated across generations and earned him enduring popularity.

He also emerged as one of Malayalam cinema’s finest screenwriters, penning landmark films such as Odaruthammava Aalariyam, Sandesam, Nadodikkattu and Njan Prakashan. His writing blended humour with incisive commentary on bureaucracy, unemployment, politics and middle-class struggles.

As a director, Sreenivasan delivered critically acclaimed films including Vadakkunokkiyanthram and Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala, further demonstrating his deep understanding of human relationships and social complexities. He also co-produced notable successes like Katha Parayumpol and Thattathin Marayathu.

Sreenivasan is survived by his sons Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan, both of whom continue his legacy in the Malayalam film industry.
