Ranjeev Puri could become the first Indian-American Speaker of a state House in the US if Democrats win control of Michigan’s chamber.

Ranjeev Puri, an Indian-origin lawmaker in the Michigan House of Representatives, is seeking re-election as Democrats aim to regain control of the chamber in the November 3, 2026, elections. If Democrats win a majority and select him for the position, Puri could become the first Indian-American Speaker of a state House in the United States.

Puri, 42, is contesting against Republican candidate Allison Kay Fuller. Michigan’s 110-member House is currently controlled by Republicans, with Matt Hall serving as Speaker, while Democrat Gretchen Whitmer is the state’s governor.

Born to Punjabi immigrant parents, Puri made history in 2020 by becoming the first Sikh American elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. He is currently serving his third term and was appointed leader of the Democratic Party in the Republican-controlled chamber in 2025.

Democrats Hope to Flip Michigan House

The November election is crucial to Puri’s political ambitions. Democrats are seeking to win enough seats to take control of the chamber, potentially allowing the party to choose a new Speaker.

US Congresswoman Haley Stevens expressed support for the effort, saying Michigan Democrats were working to flip the state House and make Puri the country’s first Indian-American State House Speaker.

However, the outcome will depend on the election results and the decisions made by lawmakers if Democrats secure a majority. Puri’s potential elevation to the position is therefore not guaranteed.

From Obama Campaigns to Michigan Politics

Before entering state politics, Puri worked on Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns in 2008 and 2012. He later earned an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and returned to Michigan, where he worked in the automotive industry.

His political career has made him a prominent figure among Indian-American and Sikh-American communities in the state.

According to the Indian American Voter Atlas, Michigan is home to approximately 127,000 people of Indian origin, representing around 1.27 per cent of its population.

The November 3 election will determine whether Puri secures another term and whether Democrats can regain control of the Michigan House. A favourable outcome for the party could place him in contention for a historic leadership role in American state politics.
