Trump Warns Iran at UNGA, Says Deal Could Follow US Midterm Elections

US President Donald Trump used his address to the United Nations General Assembly to warn Iran over its nuclear programme and outline his position on a possible future agreement. Trump said the US had previously offered Iran economic cooperation in exchange for ending its nuclear programme and support for terrorism, but claimed Tehran rejected the proposal. He also said Iran’s nuclear facilities had suffered major damage during the conflict.

Trump said he believed a deal with Iran could be reached after the US midterm elections on November 3, while stressing that his administration would not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. He said the timing of a potential agreement was linked to Iran’s assessment of the US election, although he separately stated that the midterms do not influence his own Iran policy.

The US president also called on countries to maintain economic pressure on Iran and said that greater stability in the region could push global oil prices lower. Oil markets have remained sensitive to developments surrounding the conflict and the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supplies.

Trump’s remarks came amid continuing diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict, with the possibility of further US-Iran discussions being explored during the UN gathering.
