Rohit Sharma Takes Dig at England After Ashes Series Loss in Australia

Indian batting star Rohit Sharma joined the chorus of criticism aimed at England cricket team after their latest Ashes setback in Australia, delivering a tongue-in-cheek jibe following England’s series defeat.

England’s struggles continued as they lost the third Test at Adelaide by 82 runs, handing Australia cricket team an unassailable 3–0 lead in the five-match Ashes series. The result confirmed England’s fourth consecutive Ashes series loss in Australia, with the hosts retaining the urn yet again.

Speaking at a university event while addressing graduating students, Rohit Sharma reflected on the most memorable victories of his career and recalled India’s historic Gabba Test win in 2021, a match widely regarded as one of the greatest comebacks in Test cricket history.

Recalling the match, Rohit highlighted how India defied the odds despite missing several first-choice players due to injuries. He mentioned the then Australian captain Tim Paine, whose pre-match comments had added fuel to India’s motivation.

“We won a Test match in Australia in 2021 at the Gabba, where Rishabh Pant played an incredible knock. No one believed we could win that match. We had three debutants in the XI, and Australia had never lost at the Gabba before,” Rohit said.

Taking a light-hearted swipe at England, Rohit emphasised the difficulty of playing Test cricket in Australia. “Winning in Australia is the toughest challenge in Test cricket — you can ask England about that,” he remarked, drawing laughter and applause.

India’s Gabba victory helped them clinch the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2021, marking a landmark achievement for the team under extreme circumstances.

Meanwhile, England’s loss in Adelaide extended their miserable run in Australia. Their last Test victory Down Under came in 2011 under Andrew Strauss. Since then, England have played 18 Tests in Australia, losing 16, with two ending in draws.

With two matches still remaining in the ongoing Ashes series, Ben Stokes and his side will aim to avoid a potential 5–0 whitewash, which would mark the fourth such outcome in Ashes history.
