Russia has welcomed India’s readiness to contribute to efforts for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine, as Kyiv considers ceasefire proposals from multiple countries.

Russia has welcomed the India Ukraine ceasefire proposal, with Moscow saying it appreciates New Delhi’s readiness to make a practical contribution towards resolving the conflict. The response comes after reports that India has presented a three-part proposal aimed at advancing discussions on a possible peaceful settlement.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that Russia was grateful to India for its willingness to contribute to efforts surrounding Ukraine. His comments followed remarks by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who said Kyiv had received proposals from India, Türkiye, Egypt and the United States.

Ukraine calls India’s proposal broadest

Sybiha said India’s proposal was the “broadest” among the four offers. He indicated that Ukraine was prepared to consider a ceasefire covering energy infrastructure and the Black Sea alongside a halt to combat operations.

Ukraine has also continued to call for an unconditional ceasefire along the frontline. Moscow, however, has rejected such a proposal and maintained that the conflict should ultimately be resolved through a comprehensive peace agreement.

The Black Sea remains a major concern amid attacks involving missiles and drones, with ports, infrastructure and commercial shipping facing risks linked to the continuing conflict.

Putin praises Modi’s peace efforts

Russia’s response follows comments from President Vladimir Putin, who recently praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s continued efforts to encourage dialogue.

Putin said Modi regularly raises the issue of ending the Ukraine conflict during their meetings and described the Indian leader as someone who takes a keen interest in finding solutions. Putin also said Modi had “very good ideas” aimed at finding mutually acceptable outcomes.

Ahead of the BRICS summit in New Delhi last month, Modi and Putin held discussions during which the Russian President briefed the Prime Minister on the conflict and ongoing peace initiatives.

Moscow has previously said it would welcome India’s efforts to promote dialogue and diplomacy.

India’s diplomatic role

India has maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict while continuing to engage with both sides.

Russia’s latest response indicates that New Delhi’s diplomatic outreach is being acknowledged by Moscow as discussions over possible ceasefire arrangements continue.

However, significant differences remain between Russia and Ukraine over the scope and terms of any ceasefire, meaning the latest proposals represent an ongoing diplomatic process rather than a confirmed peace agreement.
