Shahid Afridi Rekindles Feud With Gautam Gambhir, Backs Rohit & Kohli for 2027 World Cup

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has reignited his long-standing feud with India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, taking a sharp dig at the former opener while commenting on his coaching style. Speaking to Telecom Asia Sport, Afridi said Gambhir began his coaching stint with an attitude that suggested “whatever he said was right,” but later realised that “you are not always right.”

The remarks revived one of cricket’s most talked-about rivalries, dating back to their infamous confrontation during the 2007 Asia Cup. Afridi has repeatedly referenced the incident in interviews and in his autobiography, describing Gambhir as “negative,” “saryal” (irritable), and someone who “behaves like a cross between Don Bradman and James Bond.”

Afridi also criticised Gambhir’s personality and demeanour, claiming he lacked positivity and had “no personality.” Gambhir, over the years, has responded just as strongly. During the 2019 election campaign, he mocked Afridi’s mental maturity and said the former Pakistan all-rounder needed psychiatric help.

Alongside his barbs at Gambhir, Afridi also spoke about India’s senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He backed both stalwarts to continue playing ODI cricket until the 2027 World Cup, provided they are rotated wisely.

Calling Rohit and Kohli the “backbones of Indian batting,” Afridi said the duo’s recent performances show they still have the form and fitness to play at the highest level. He suggested resting them against weaker teams to preserve longevity.

For Indian fans, the statement adds to the ongoing discussion about how long India’s two modern greats will continue, especially as the 2027 World Cup approaches. Both players remain in strong form, and the upcoming years could mark their final push for an ODI trophy.
