Slovakia Halts Emergency Power Aid to Ukraine Amid Oil Transit Dispute

Slovakia has halted emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine, escalating tensions between the two countries amid a growing dispute over disrupted oil deliveries in Central Europe. The move comes as Ukraine continues to face daily power shortages due to ongoing attacks on its energy infrastructure.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced the suspension, describing it as a reciprocal measure in response to halted Russian oil transit through Ukraine. He stated that assistance would resume once oil shipments to Slovakia are restored.

Oil pipeline disruption triggers dispute

Russian oil deliveries to Slovakia and Hungary have been interrupted since January 27 following damage to the Druzhba pipeline. Ukrainian officials say the pipeline was hit by Russian drone attacks, disrupting the flow of crude transported through Ukrainian territory into Central Europe.

Slovakia and Hungary, both reliant on the pipeline, have questioned the disruption and suggested that the halt may be politically motivated. Both countries had previously received exemptions from European Union restrictions on Russian oil imports.

Energy security concerns rise in Central Europe

The interruption has triggered an oil emergency in Slovakia, increasing pressure on the government to secure energy supplies. Fico stated that Slovakia would immediately lift its suspension of power assistance if oil transit resumes.

He also warned that further measures could follow if the situation persists, including reconsidering Slovakia’s support for Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union.

Ukraine urges cooperation

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for constructive cooperation and responsible engagement to resolve the dispute. Ukraine continues to rely on emergency electricity imports from neighbouring countries to stabilise its power grid following repeated strikes on energy facilities.

Political and diplomatic tensions deepen

The decision has sparked criticism from Slovakia’s opposition, which warned that suspending energy support could undermine regional solidarity.

Fico asserted that intelligence assessments suggest the pipeline remains functional and claimed Slovak officials have not been granted access to inspect the allegedly damaged section. He described the halt in oil transit as a political decision intended to pressure Slovakia over its position on the Russia–Ukraine conflict.
