Sunil Gavaskar Wins Delhi HC Order: Google, Meta, X Must Remove Fake Online Content

The Delhi High Court has directed Google, Meta, and X (formerly Twitter) to take down all online content that misuses cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar’s name, image, or persona. The order came after Gavaskar filed a suit seeking protection against the unauthorised use of his identity on various digital platforms—ranging from fake statements attributed to him to bogus autographed merchandise being sold online.

Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora instructed that Gavaskar must submit a list of specific URLs within 48 hours, after which the three companies must act within a week to remove the infringing material. The court clarified that only URLs explicitly identified by Gavaskar will be acted upon.

The former Indian captain flagged misleading posts that falsely showed him criticising India’s men's cricket coach Gautam Gambhir and other players, as well as fraudulent online listings selling autographed items with no real connection to him.

The case underscores the growing difficulty public figures face in safeguarding their image and personality rights in the digital age. The court’s order strengthens the precedent for celebrities seeking swift legal intervention against impersonation, fake endorsements, and unauthorised commercial exploitation online.
