The Supreme Court of India sharply criticised the West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee after seven judicial officers were held hostage for nearly nine hours in Malda.
The court described the incident as “pre-planned and motivated,” raising serious concerns about law and order in the state, especially during an ongoing electoral process.
The incident took place at the Kaliachak II Block Development Office in Malda, where officials were engaged in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Seven judicial officers, including three women, were reportedly surrounded by protesters who were opposing the deletion of certain names from the voter list. The situation escalated into a prolonged gherao, effectively holding the officials inside the premises for several hours.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court remarked that West Bengal appears to be one of the most politically polarised states. The judges expressed concern that such incidents could damage the credibility of the democratic process and discourage officials from carrying out their duties.
The court stressed that any attempt to obstruct election-related work is a serious threat to free and fair elections.
To ensure the safety of officials, the Supreme Court directed the deployment of central armed forces in the region. This step aims to prevent further disruptions and provide protection during sensitive election-related activities.
The court made it clear that maintaining law and order during elections is a top priority and cannot be compromised under any circumstances.
In a significant direction, the Supreme Court asked the Election Commission of India to consider assigning the investigation to central agencies such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
This indicates the seriousness of the case and the possibility of a deeper probe into the incident and its larger implications.
The Malda hostage incident has raised major concerns about governance and election security in West Bengal. The court’s strong remarks signal that strict action may follow to ensure accountability.
The case highlights the need for stronger administrative control and safeguards to protect officials involved in democratic processes.
