The THE World University Rankings 2027 have placed the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru as the highest-ranked Indian institution, at 254th globally. Despite having the largest number of ranked universities in Asia, India did not have any institution in the global top 200 this year.
India has 143 universities featured in the latest Times Higher Education ranking, 15 more than in the previous edition. This makes India the most represented country in Asia for the second consecutive year.
IISc leads Indian institutions
IISc recorded an overall score of 57.0 in the 2027 rankings. Its strongest performance came in the research environment category, where it scored 98.0. The institute recorded 62.1 for teaching and 58.6 for research quality.
IISc was placed in the 201–250 band in the 2026 rankings but has now received an exact global position of 254.
Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences followed IISc among Indian institutions, securing a position in the 326–350 global band. Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences was placed in the 451–500 band, while Jamia Millia Islamia and KIIT University featured in the 501–550 band.
KIIT improved from the 601–800 band in 2026 to 501–550 in 2027. Saveetha also moved up from 351–400 to 326–350. Jamia Millia Islamia, meanwhile, moved from the 401–500 band to 501–550.
India expands its global presence
The 2027 edition includes 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories. India’s 143 institutions represent an increase of 15 from the previous edition.
Turkey has the second-highest representation, with 124 universities. More than 1,000 Asian universities are included in the latest ranking, compared with 929 in the previous edition.
The rankings also show the growing presence of Asian institutions near the top of the global table. China’s Tsinghua University is ranked 11th globally, followed by Peking University at 13th. The National University of Singapore has also entered the global top 15.
Globally, the University of Oxford retains the top position, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Princeton University and Stanford University share third place, while the University of Cambridge ranks fifth.
THE evaluates research-intensive universities using indicators covering teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry-related performance.
