The report highlighted how the event, meant to celebrate Messi’s historic presence in the city, was overtaken by political figures and their associates, with access allegedly prioritised for VIPs and celebrities over ordinary football enthusiasts. While selected guests and political insiders were seen clicking photographs with the Argentine superstar inside the venue, large numbers of fans were denied entry and remained confined outside the stadium.

Roy’s broadcast pointed to what he described as a clear abuse of privilege, where political influence overshadowed public enthusiasm. The report also mentioned the presence of actress Subhashree Ganguly among those who gained access, further fuelling criticism over preferential treatment.

The incident has triggered political backlash, with the Bharatiya Janata Party demanding the resignation of West Bengal’s Sports Minister, accusing the state government of gross mismanagement and disrespect towards fans. BJP leaders said the episode reflected a broader pattern of VIP culture undermining public events in the state.
