Why Trump Now Backs Releasing the Epstein Files

In a significant shift, US President Donald Trump has reversed his earlier stance and urged House Republicans to vote in favour of releasing the Jeffrey Epstein Files — a cache of documents linked to the disgraced financier, convicted paedophile, and sex trafficker. Posting on Truth Social, Trump said he has “nothing to hide” and backed full disclosure of whatever the House is “legally entitled to”.

Just weeks ago, Trump had dismissed the push for transparency as a “Democrat con job”, accusing his political opponents of attempting to create a distraction. His abrupt U-turn comes ahead of a key House vote that could compel the Justice Department to release additional Epstein-related documents.

Why This Reversal Matters

The Epstein Files reportedly contain names of high-profile businessmen, global leaders and politicians. UK’s Prince Andrew has already faced severe consequences after being named in previously released documents. But Trump himself has not been directly linked to any criminal activity, despite being mentioned in earlier court filings involving numerous public figures including Bill Clinton and Larry Summers.

Sources suggest more than 100 Republicans were prepared to back a bill enforcing broader disclosure — a move that may have pushed Trump to align himself with the majority within his party.

Trump’s Justification: “I Don’t Care”

Trump emphasised that he removed Epstein from his Mar-a-Lago resort years ago due to his “behaviour”.
In his public post, he wrote:

“The House Oversight Committee can have whatever they are legally entitled to — I don’t care! All I care about is Republicans getting back on point.”

He insisted the party must stay focused on economic priorities, border security and national defence — a message he amplified after Republicans suffered losses in recent gubernatorial and mayoral elections across the US.

Party Pressure and Internal Politics

Trump’s previous opposition created friction within the Republican fold.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, a key MAGA figure, strongly backed releasing the files, pushing the House towards a vote.
Representative Thomas Massie led the push for disclosure, prompting Trump to publicly criticise him as “disloyal”.

Political analysts say Trump’s reversal reflects a strategic decision to avoid conflict within his base while also placing Democrats under pressure, since Epstein's network included individuals across both parties.

A Complicating Factor: The Ongoing Investigation

Attorney General Pam Bondi reopened the inquiry into Epstein’s controversial 2019 death earlier this year. Since the probe remains active, some material may be shielded under ongoing litigation rules, potentially delaying full transparency.

Public demand for the files has surged, fuelled by speculation, conspiracy theories, and Trump’s own election campaign promise to release the documents if elected.

The administration has not clarified when or how much of the material will be released. If disclosed, the files could reshape public understanding of Epstein’s circle and have repercussions for leaders across both Republican and Democratic ranks.
