A new champion is set to emerge in the Women’s Hockey India League as SG Pipers take on Shrachi Bengal Tigers in the final at Ranchi on Saturday, January 10. With both sides having produced intense, closely fought encounters throughout the season, the title clash promises to be a high-quality contest between two well-matched teams.
The SG Pipers’ journey this season has been nothing short of a turnaround story. After finishing at the bottom of the table in the inaugural edition of the league, the Delhi-based franchise has staged a remarkable revival. Under the leadership and influence of experienced players such as Navneet Kaur, the Pipers not only bounced back strongly but also became the first team to qualify for the final.
They finished the league stage at the top of the table with 11 points, showcasing a balanced combination of attacking intent and defensive solidity. With 11 goals scored, SG Pipers ended the season as the second-highest scoring side, while also boasting the second-best defensive record after conceding just nine goals. Navneet has led from the front, contributing four crucial goals and playing a key role in shaping the team’s attacking structure.
Reflecting on the team’s transformation, Navneet highlighted the importance of experience and cohesion. She explained that the previous season suffered due to a lack of on-field connection, largely because of an inexperienced squad. This year, the franchise consciously built a more balanced unit, ensuring stability across defence, midfield and attack. That strategic planning, initiated immediately after last season ended, has paid dividends in the form of consistent performances and a place in the final.
Standing in their way, however, is a Bengal Tigers side that has had the Pipers’ number in the league’s short history. The Shrachi Bengal Tigers have beaten SG Pipers in all four previous head-to-head encounters, including two tightly contested matches this season that were decided via shootouts. This psychological edge could play a role as both teams step into the high-pressure environment of a final.
The Bengal Tigers have relied heavily on penalty-corner specialist Agustina Gorzelany, who has scored five of the team’s seven goals this season. Despite the dependence on set-piece efficiency, captain Vandana Katariya believes the side has grown stronger with each match. She noted that the coach’s vision of fighting for the title has shaped the team’s mindset from the outset, driving steady improvement and strong bonding within the squad.
According to Vandana, consistency will be the decisive factor in the final. With the team having built strong understanding through meetings and match situations, the focus is now firmly on executing plans under pressure and seizing the championship opportunity.
As Ranchi prepares to host the summit clash, the Women’s Hockey India League is guaranteed a first-time champion. Whether SG Pipers can finally end the Bengal Tigers’ dominance or whether the Tigers continue their winning streak, the final is set to deliver a thrilling finish to the season.
