Counting of votes for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Election 2026 began at 10 am on Friday, marking a crucial political moment for Maharashtra as results pour in from India’s richest civic body after a four-year delay. Early trends indicate that the BJP–Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) alliance has taken a narrow lead, while the reunited Thackeray camp remains close behind in several wards.
Vote counting is underway across 23 counting centres in Mumbai, with extensive security arrangements including CCTV surveillance, fire safety measures and medical facilities. Authorities have deployed over 2,000 officials and staff to ensure a smooth and transparent counting process.
As per initial figures, the BJP–Sena alliance is leading in over 30 wards, while the Opposition bloc comprising Shiv Sena (UBT), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) has established leads in more than 20 wards. The Congress is also ahead in a few pockets, reflecting a fragmented yet competitive race.
The results will decide control of the 227-member BMC, which commands an annual budget of nearly Rs 74,400 crore, making it Asia’s richest municipal body. The contest is being seen as a direct political face-off between the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the Opposition’s experiment of reuniting estranged political families.
This election is politically significant due to the reunion of Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray after nearly two decades. Their alliance hoped to consolidate the Marathi voter base against the BJP-led combine. However, exit polls released earlier had projected a comfortable victory for the BJP–Sena alliance, predicting over 130 seats for the Mahayuti.
In contrast, exit polls suggested the Thackeray-led alliance could struggle to cross the halfway mark, raising questions over the electoral impact of their reunion.
Mumbai recorded a voter turnout of 52.94 per cent, lower than the 55.53 per cent turnout seen in the 2017 civic polls. Polling day witnessed complaints of missing names from voter lists, verification delays and the use of marker pens instead of indelible ink, triggering allegations of irregularities from Opposition leaders.
Despite these concerns, election officials maintained that the process remained fair and transparent.
Unlike previous elections, vote counting is being conducted in a phased manner, with only two wards taken up at a time. Officials have cautioned that this revised system may delay the declaration of final results, with complete trends likely to emerge later in the day.
The BMC results are expected to shape political narratives ahead of future Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra. Control over Mumbai’s civic body not only brings administrative power but also carries symbolic weight in the state’s political landscape.
As counting continues, all eyes remain on whether the BJP–Sena alliance can convert early leads into a decisive mandate or if the Thackeray reunion can still spring a surprise in India’s financial capital.
