Delhi Businessman Dies After Helmet Attack in Connaught Place, Delivery Agents Arrested

A shocking incident in central Delhi has sparked renewed debate over late-night safety after a 36-year-old businessman succumbed to injuries weeks after being assaulted near Connaught Place. The victim, identified as Shivam Gupta from East Delhi, was allegedly attacked by a group of delivery agents during a confrontation close to the Rajiv Chowk Metro station earlier this month.

According to police officials, the incident took place late on January 2 when Gupta had visited the area to attend a gathering with a friend. Preliminary investigations suggest that a disagreement broke out between him and a group of delivery riders after he reportedly asked them for water. The argument soon escalated into violence, with several individuals allegedly attacking him using helmets and physical force before leaving him unconscious on the road.

Authorities received a PCR call around 1:30 am on January 3 after passersby noticed an injured man lying in a pool of blood. Emergency teams rushed Gupta to a nearby hospital, where doctors identified multiple severe head injuries and a hematoma. Due to his critical condition, he was unable to give a statement to investigators.

Meanwhile, his family grew concerned when he failed to return home that night. Repeated attempts to contact him went unanswered until police informed them that he had been hospitalised. Over the next few days, Gupta underwent intensive medical treatment, including surgery at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Despite initial signs of recovery, his condition deteriorated, and he passed away on January 19 after battling for life for more than two weeks.

Police teams have since examined CCTV footage from surrounding areas, collected forensic evidence from the crime scene and questioned multiple witnesses. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and officials have indicated that further charges may be added as the investigation progresses. Two suspects have been taken into custody, while efforts continue to locate other individuals believed to be involved in the assault.

Family members have demanded strict action against the accused, alleging that Gupta was brutally attacked with helmets and left without help. The tragedy has once again drawn attention to security challenges in crowded commercial hubs such as Connaught Place, especially during late-night hours when footfall remains high but supervision is often limited.

Residents and civic groups have urged authorities to increase surveillance, improve policing and implement stronger safety measures in nightlife zones to prevent similar incidents. As the investigation unfolds, the case highlights ongoing concerns about public safety and accountability in one of Delhi’s busiest urban districts.
