A tragic road accident in West Delhi has claimed the life of a six-year-old schoolgirl, once again highlighting the dangers of reckless driving in residential and school zones. The incident occurred in Janakpuri when a speeding car rammed into an e-rickshaw carrying the child and her grandmother on their way to school.
The accident took place at around 7:40 am near the Janakpuri Fire Station on February 17. The young victim, identified as Preshelle Prince, was travelling with her maternal grandmother, Mercy Xavier, 57. According to police, a speeding Santro car struck the e-rickshaw from behind with great force, causing it to overturn. Both passengers were thrown onto the road and suffered serious injuries.
Passersby later helped move the injured to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Janakpuri. Due to the severity of her injuries, the child was subsequently shifted to a private hospital in Dwarka for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to rash and negligent driving causing death. The offending vehicle has been seized, and the driver, identified as Sanjeev, a resident of Majra Dabas, has been taken into custody. Further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The child’s grandmother, who survived the crash, described the terrifying moments following the collision. She alleged that some bystanders failed to offer immediate assistance despite her pleas for help. According to her account, she requested a nearby driver to help transport the injured child to the hospital, but he left the scene without assisting.
The child’s mother, who works at a hospital, said she received a distress call informing her of the accident. She later learned from witnesses that an elderly woman was seen crying and asking for help on the roadside. Eventually, a hospital staff member and a young boy stepped forward and helped take the child to the hospital when others did not intervene.
This incident comes just weeks after another fatal crash in West Delhi, intensifying concerns about speeding vehicles and inadequate enforcement of traffic rules. Road safety advocates have repeatedly stressed the need for stricter speed monitoring, improved traffic calming measures, and better protection near schools and residential areas.
The tragedy has renewed calls for authorities to strengthen enforcement and promote public awareness to prevent such incidents. As Delhi continues to witness rising traffic and congestion, ensuring safer roads for children and pedestrians remains an urgent priority.
