Democrats Seize US Congress as Voters Deliver Major Setback to Trump

Democratic victories in Congress and key states mark a major setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

The Democrats seized US Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, delivering a major political setback to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party. The opposition party also captured several key governorships, reflecting widespread voter dissatisfaction with the administration's policies.

Republicans suffered defeats in traditionally strong states, including Texas, Georgia and Iowa, where Democratic candidates secured gubernatorial victories. Democrats also made significant gains in Senate races, taking control of the chamber and putting Trump's legislative agenda under pressure.

Trump Policies Face Voter Backlash

The election results were widely seen as a response to public anger over Trump's policies, including the war on Iran and its reported impact on the cost of living and diesel prices.

An Associated Press poll indicated that around six in 10 voters disapproved of Trump's performance as president. Nearly 70 per cent wanted Congress to exercise stronger checks and balances on the presidency, while approximately six in 10 believed Trump prioritised his personal interests over those of the country.

Republican leader Chris Christie described the outcome as the end of the Trump era. Trump, meanwhile, congratulated Democrats and said he was willing to work with them.

However, he later argued that Republicans had lost because he was not personally on the ballot, claiming the party would have secured a landslide victory otherwise.

Democrats Make Historic Gains in Key States

Several high-profile races highlighted the scale of the Democratic gains. In Texas, Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Governor Greg Abbott, becoming the state's first Latino elected governor.

In Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms became the state's first Black governor after defeating Republican nominee Rick Jackson. Democrat Rob Sand also won the Iowa governor's race.

Democrats secured important Senate victories as well. James Talarico defeated Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, marking the first time in nearly four decades that Texas would send a Democrat to the Senate. Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley in North Carolina, while Sherrod Brown won in Ohio against Republican Jon Husted.

Indian-American Republican Vivek Ramaswamy also lost the Ohio governor's race to Democrat Amy Acton.

What Democratic Control Means for Trump

With Democrats taking control of Congress, Trump's ability to advance his legislative priorities is expected to face significant restrictions. Lawmakers can block presidential measures and challenge parts of his agenda.

However, the President retains the authority to issue executive orders and veto legislation passed by Congress during the remainder of his term.

The 2026 midterm results therefore represent a significant shift in Washington's political balance, giving Democrats greater influence over the legislative process and increasing scrutiny of the Trump administration.
