US President Donald Trump has said he will respect the results of the upcoming US midterm elections if the polls are conducted honestly. His remarks come as Republicans seek to retain control of Congress ahead of the November 3, 2026, elections.
“I will respect the results of the midterm election if they're honest elections,” Trump said on October 27 before boarding Air Force One for a campaign trip to Texas.
The statement comes as Republicans face challenges in several contests across the country, prompting the president to increase campaigning in traditionally Republican states.
Republicans Face Competitive Races Across the Country
Trump was travelling to Texas to campaign as Republican Ken Paxton faces Democrat James Talarico in the race for a US Senate seat.
Republican strategists have expressed concern about the party's prospects in contests ranging from Alaska to South Carolina. According to the report, voter dissatisfaction over the effects of Trump's tariffs and the war with Iran on inflation has added to concerns about the party's electoral position.
The November elections will determine control of both chambers of Congress, making the outcome important for the administration's ability to advance its legislative priorities.
House and Senate Control at Stake
All 435 seats in the US House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate's 100 seats are scheduled to be contested.
Opinion polls suggest Democrats could regain control of the House of Representatives, while the Senate remains competitive. Republicans currently control Congress, providing Trump with greater scope to pursue his legislative agenda since returning to the White House after the 2024 presidential election.
A shift in control of either chamber could affect the administration's ability to secure legislative support. If Democrats take control of the House, they could also initiate congressional investigations into the administration.
Election Outcome Could Shape Trump's Agenda
The midterm elections are a key test of the political balance in Washington during Trump's presidency. The results will influence the administration's legislative priorities and the extent of congressional oversight.
Trump's statement on accepting the outcome, conditional on the elections being honest, places election integrity among the issues surrounding the campaign. The final results will determine whether Republicans retain their congressional majorities or Democrats gain control of one or both chambers.
