Elderly Woman Dies on Lizard Island | Lost Tourist Found Dead Near Great Barrier Reef

An 80-year-old woman was tragically found dead on Lizard Island, a remote tropical paradise in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, after getting lost during a hike and failing to return to her cruise ship.

According to Australian authorities, the woman was part of a tour group from the Coral Adventurer cruise ship that had set out to trek the island’s highest point, Cook’s Look, on October 25. During the hike, she reportedly took a short rest and became separated from the group. When she failed to return, she lost her way back to the expedition vessel.

Police confirmed that the cruise ship departed around sunset before realizing she was missing. The crew immediately returned to the island, and a large-scale search and rescue operation was launched. Sadly, her body was discovered the following day.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has launched an investigation into the incident and will question the ship’s crew once it docks in Darwin later this week.

In a statement, Coral Expeditions CEO Mark Fifield expressed deep sorrow, saying,

“We are deeply sorry that this tragic event has occurred. Our thoughts and full support are with the woman’s family.”

The Coral Adventurer, according to the company’s website, accommodates up to 120 passengers and is specially designed to access remote coastal areas using expedition tenders—small boats that allow passengers to explore isolated islands and reefs.

Officials are reviewing safety protocols for island excursions following this incident to ensure the wellbeing of future passengers exploring remote destinations.
