EU-China Trade Tensions Rise as $1 Billion-a-Day Trade Gap Fuels Tougher Stance

The European Union is preparing a tougher response to China’s growing trade imbalance as concerns over subsidies, jobs and industrial competition intensify ahead of talks in Beijing.

European Union and China flags representing growing trade tensions
The EU is considering a tougher trade response as its trade deficit with China continues to widen.

EU-China trade tensions are intensifying as the European Union prepares for a potentially tougher confrontation with Beijing over a trade deficit of around €360 billion, or $410 billion. The imbalance amounts to more than $1 billion a day and has increased concerns across Europe about jobs, Chinese subsidies and pressure on key industries.

The latest developments come ahead of European Commission trade envoy Maros Sefcovic’s two-day visit to Beijing, where he is expected to hold talks with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao on narrowing the trade gap.

European Parliament Backs Stronger Response

The debate has gained momentum across the 27-member bloc. The European Parliament voted 454 to 86 in favour of a resolution calling for greater economic reciprocity and a proportionate EU response if China does not provide wider market access.

European lawmakers and economists have raised concerns about Chinese exports affecting industries including steel, automobiles, batteries, chemicals and machinery.

The EU has already introduced measures affecting Chinese steel imports and small e-commerce parcels. More aggressive options being discussed include tariffs and greater use of the bloc’s Anti-Coercion Instrument, which can restrict trade and investment when another country is considered to be exerting undue economic pressure.

France and Germany have also called for a broader rethink of the EU’s China strategy.

However, there is no complete consensus within the bloc. Spain, for example, has maintained a comparatively less confrontational approach towards Beijing.

China Warns Against Protectionism

China has pushed back against calls for tougher trade restrictions, warning that protectionism and supply-chain decoupling could harm both sides.

Chinese customs data cited in the source material showed exports to the EU rising 15.3% during the first eight months of the year, while imports from the EU increased 6.2%.

Beijing has also signalled that it could retaliate against European trade measures. China recently opened an anti-dumping investigation into EU exports of p-nitrotoluene, a chemical used in dyes and pharmaceuticals.

The wider trade relationship remains deeply interconnected. European companies rely on Chinese products and components, while Chinese manufacturers are increasingly expanding their presence in Europe.

Europe Faces a Difficult Balancing Act

European producers in sectors such as electric vehicles, batteries, solar panels, steel and machinery are facing growing competition from Chinese companies. At the same time, European economies continue to need Chinese investment, manufacturing capacity and access to the Chinese market.

That leaves Brussels facing a difficult choice: protect European industries without triggering a damaging trade conflict.

The upcoming Beijing talks therefore come at a sensitive moment. Europe is demanding greater reciprocity and a reduction in the trade imbalance, while China is signalling that it is prepared to resist measures it considers protectionist.

The outcome could shape the next phase of EU-China economic relations and determine whether both sides move towards greater cooperation or a more confrontational trade relationship.
