Haaland’s playful jab at Carragher after Man City’s 2–1 win over Real Madrid

Erling Haaland added a touch of humour to Manchester City’s Champions League win over Real Madrid by taking a playful swipe at Jamie Carragher, whose criticism of Mohamed Salah has dominated headlines in English football this week. After City’s 2-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, Haaland referenced the ongoing controversy while speaking to the media.

“I’m getting nervous now when I see Jamie Carragher in the studio,” he joked, alluding to the pundit’s recent strong remarks about Salah’s attitude and performances at Liverpool. Continuing the light-hearted tone, Haaland added, “I think I need to say Rüdiger now because Carragher is a bit of a loose cannon, so we need to be careful.”

Haaland had earlier scored the match-winning penalty after Antonio Rüdiger was penalised for dragging him down in the box. Before that, Real Madrid took the lead through Rodrygo in the 28th minute, capitalising on a quick counterattack. Manchester City responded quickly with Nico O’Reilly equalising after Thibaut Courtois spilled Josko Gvardiol’s header.

Following a VAR review, Haaland converted from the spot in the 43rd minute to score his first goal at the Bernabeu. City maintained control for much of the second half, with Courtois forced into multiple saves. Real Madrid nearly levelled through Endrick, who struck the post late in the match, but City held firm to secure an important away win.

The result lifted Manchester City to fourth place in the group with 13 points, pushing Real Madrid to seventh on 12. Haaland’s light-hearted remarks provided a moment of levity on a night shaped by tactical discipline, strong finishing, and ongoing debate around Carragher’s public critique of Salah.
