Abhishek Banerjee Alleges BJP Attack on Residence at 2 AM, Calls It Seventh Attempt on His Life

TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee alleges BJP supporters attacked his Kalighat residence, claiming it was the seventh attempt on his life in six months.

TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee speaks out after alleging an attack on his Kalighat residence in Kolkata.
Abhishek Banerjee has accused BJP supporters of attacking his residence in the early hours of Saturday.

The Abhishek Banerjee attack allegation has triggered a political confrontation in Kolkata after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP accused BJP supporters of attacking his residence on Kalighat Road around 2 AM on Saturday.

Banerjee described the incident as the seventh attempt on his life in the past six months. His allegations came amid reports of a late-night clash between BJP and TMC supporters outside his residence, following which police personnel intervened to control the situation.

The Diamond Harbour MP claimed that BJP supporters pelted stones at his house after conducting reconnaissance of the premises for two days.

In a post on X, Banerjee shared two videos allegedly showing the incident. One video shows a man striking the gates of a building with a bamboo stick, while the other appears to show a group throwing objects inside the premises. Police personnel can also be seen intervening in the footage.

Banerjee said the incident raised serious questions about the safety of elected representatives and ordinary citizens in West Bengal.

TMC MP Accuses Police and Judiciary of Inaction

Following the alleged attack, Banerjee accused the state administration and judiciary of failing to respond to repeated threats against him.

He claimed that law and order had deteriorated and alleged that neither police authorities nor the judiciary had taken adequate action despite what he described as multiple attempts on his life.

The incident also led to a confrontation between Banerjee and police personnel outside his residence. The TMC MP staged a brief sit-in protest, or dharna, following the altercation.

Police intervened as supporters of the BJP and TMC clashed in the area.

Banerjee also questioned the safety of ordinary residents, arguing that if an elected Member of Parliament could face such an incident, the situation for common people could be more concerning.

Abhishek Banerjee Claims Surveillance Before Attack

The latest allegations followed an earlier statement by Banerjee about unidentified individuals allegedly monitoring his office and residence over two days.

In a previous post on X, he claimed that the individuals had been conducting reconnaissance and that the registration number of their motorcycle had been identified.

He further alleged that when confronted, the individuals claimed to be police personnel.

The TMC MP questioned why unidentified people were allegedly monitoring the premises of an elected representative and who had authorised the activity.

Banerjee Seeks Immediate Investigation

Banerjee demanded an immediate and thorough investigation to establish the identities of the individuals allegedly involved in the surveillance, determine who sent them and uncover their motives.

He also drew the attention of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Kolkata Police, the Union Home Ministry and West Bengal Police to the matter.

The allegations have added to political tensions in West Bengal. The claims regarding the attack and alleged surveillance remain Banerjee's allegations, and the investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
